At the end of November a tourist T-boned my car, leaving me unscathed but carless. Two weeks later my insurance company totaled it—it was too old to justify the repairs. By the time I found a new one, I’d spent nearly all of December dealing with claims and car rentals, in addition to travel and Christmas. During the lull between holidays, a car salesman drove me to the garage where the dealership kept its used vehicles, including the one I would soon buy. “I remember going to a screening upstairs,” I told him, omitting the fact it pre-dated his birth. The film was “The Hudsucker Proxy”, and I loved it at first sight.
